My Top Horror TV Show Picks (And Where To Find Them)

So I was feeling a little nostalgic for the good old days when I would just sit and watch TV for hours and get lost in someone else's horror-filled world. I love writing, but man does it take up a lot of your time. I hardly ever get to toss on a DVD and relax. I guess that's something I should work on, but until then, here is a list of my favorite Horror TV Shows & where you can find them.

Z Nation:

Now you knew this was gonna be on the list. My current series of books (Planet Dead) was written with Z Nation playing in the background. Now I know some Walking Dead (TWD) diehards that can't stand Z Nation because it isn't realistic enough or there's too much humor, but those are all the reasons why I love this show.

TWD is just one shit show episode after another, you feel drained after watching them back to back, there's no break from the tension. Z Nation does a wonderful job at giving you tension, an epic story, and some great laughs.  You can find this series on SyFy, the new season comes out this fall but you can also watch old episodes on Netflix, SYFY.com, and YouTube.

Supernatural :

I shouldn't have to explain why I enjoy this show, it's on season 13, everyone should know how awesome the Winchester Boys are (Well Dean, not Sam...Fight Me) The brotherly bond that these two have is epic, I wish I was like that with my real brothers. While the show has moved away from its original concept of hunting a different supernatural being each episode, it's still has a strong story being built and an even stronger fan base. If you got a good month or so, you can sit down and watch it from season 1 on Netflix or just jump in on the current season on The CW or The CW app (Don't do that, you'll be lost as all hell.)

Are You Afraid Of The Dark:

I'm gonna start this off with, Netflix needs this show! Come on, who wasn't a fan of Are You Afraid Of The Dark? (AYAOTD) That show had me spooked as a kid, from the haunted train episode to the boy that drowned in the river. Everything was so creepy and it seemed like every young star was trying to be on that show. Tia & Tamera were on two different episodes and I remember them well, because I was married to them as a child, I wanted to clone myself so...I'm getting off subject, the point is this show is awesome and you can find it (For a price) at: YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Vudu,  and Google Play

Tales From The Crypt:

This was the only thing I watched on HBO as a child (Other than Spawn and those weekend fairytale cartoons) Tales From The Crypt! I had the whole collection on DVD and somehow between leaving for the Army and coming back, I lost it. It still hurts me. I love this series, I love the whole anthology aspect, I love the old EC Comics and how they stood up for freedom of speech within the industry (It didn't work and it was kind of EC comic's editor's fault but still, what balls!) Everything about this show just makes me smile. Not sure what my favorite episode is, I love the one with Demi Moore when she's looking for a rich husband, and of course the one with a crazy killer Santa. If you haven't seen this show, you need to stop what you're doing right now and check it out, it's a must for horror fans. You can find it on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play

Fear Itself:

So I first came across this lost gem when it was streaming on Netflix, I watched the whole thing in a day. It was so good! I love anthology shows, there is something about them. Maybe I just like that I don't have to follow one story all the time and if I miss an episode I can still keep going. Fear Itself is awesome and well written, my favorite episode is the zombie episode and the one where they move into a new house and the neighborhood has full control over everyone's life. My wife got me the DVD set so I can watch this beauty whenever I want but for you unlucky souls (or lucky if you have it) you can watch it on Shudder

Looking For A Zombie Group To Call Home On Facebook?

Slasher:

Good does not even begin to explain what this series is. Slasher was Chiller's first and only show I think, that came out around the time everyone wanted to make slasher shows. It went up against Scream on MTV and Scream Queens on Fox but Slasher was on a whole other level. This show is truly like watching a slasher movie. Season one has an epic Halloween backstory that causes things to unfold throughout the show and people start dropping like flies and like any good Slasher we have the creepy and very smart masked killer. Chiller canceled it and then Chiller went belly up but good old Netflix came in and saved the day. Season one was awesome and it was on cable, Season two was epic because there were no rules! Netflix ran with it and I can't wait for season three. It's pretty much an anthology series, the seasons have nothing to do with one another. Check this out! it's on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, and Vudu but you can only get season two on Netflix.

Twilight Zone:

Yes, I saved the best for last. I remember sitting and watching The Twilight Zone with my dad, we used to watch tons of black and white tv shows. Since he passed away last year, I've been trying my best to come to terms with his death and our overall relationship. So this show hurts me to watch it and hurts me not to watch. I love it because as a writer, I feel like my brain goes into overdrive when The Twilight Zone is on. I hope to just relax on the weekends and watch it with my son when he gets older. You can find it on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, iTuVudu VuDu, CBS, Hulu

Well, those are all my Horror TV choices. I hope it gives you something worth watching this weekend. If you're looking for something to read check out what I'm currently reading:

Quake-A Short Story By Sylvester Barzey

Dust lined the window. It had settled after years of neglect. Ronnie stood at the window, eyes fixed on the surrounding area.
“Can you hear me, Ronnie? Over” Crackle. Ronnie pushed down on the button,
“Yeah, is this gonna be bad?” Ronnie asked. He stared at the Desert landscape and pressed the button once again, “Over.” The glass on the old wooden table started to Tremble slightly, sending waves throughout Ronnie’s Whiskey.
“What you doing out there Ronnie? Over.” Crackle. Ronnie smiled,
“It’s my uncle’s place. I thought it was a good place to hold up. Over” Ronnie said.
“You by yourself? Over.” Crackle.
“Yeah. I’ve never been in an earthquake before. Over,” Ronnie said.
“Well Ronnie I’m not gonna lie, this is a shitshow. Over,” Crackle. Ronnie laughed,
“Like a funny story over drinks type shitshow or the call My next Of kin kind? Over,” Ronnie said.

“Ronnie, do you feel the floor Trembling? Over” Crackle.
“Yeah, Over,” Ronnie said.
“Well in 20 minutes that Tremble is gonna turn into a rumble. Over.” Crackle, Ronnie smiled,
“So hide under the table or something, Over,” Ronnie said.
“Ronnie this ain’t no fucking earthquake!” Crackle. Ronnie could see more dark figures forming within the dust cloud. Their feet creating a stampede along the Desert ground. “Do you read? Over,” they were clawing at the air as they raced towards the shed. A sea of dead washing up in a bone-dry oasis. “Ronnie! Over.” Crackle.
“Can we pretend? Over,” Ronnie said.
“Repeat? Over” Crackle.

“For just a little while, can we pretend? Over.” Ronnie said. It was a moment before the radio came back to life, the seas of zombies were only a few miles out now,

“Yeah Ronnie, we can pretend. Over.” The radio crackled.

No Marketing For 2018

So this might be kind of a lie. I'll be marketing, because I wouldn't be able to sell my books without marketing. What I mean is I don't plan on paying for marketing this year. Last year I made a total of $334.22 from my two books. This was with paid marketing be it Facebook ad, Amazon ads, Instagram ads, Twitter ads, and paid newsletter services like Fussy Librarian.

Now I'm not trying to say that those things don't work. I think the newsletter services are awesome, but after one of my .99 cent sales was kind of a bust, even with 4 different newsletter services connected to it, I decided that maybe I need to just take a step back from it all and see just what kind of sales I can get organically. As of right now I have 3 books on Amazon in KU and one random book floating around on Draft 2 Digital.

I know Facebook ads work for other people, but for me it seems I'm just wasting money. So my goal is to learn all I can about these paid services this year to grow my platform and sales.

Somethings I plan on doing are:

  • Blog Tours
  • YouTube
  • Blogging
  • Posting In Genre Related Facebook Groups
  • Contacting Reviewers
  • Some Gorilla Marketing
  • Writing More Books (9 to be exact)
So from time to time this year, I'll keep you updated with what I've been doing and how it's impacting my sales.

Every first of the month I'll be posting how I did the month before for my own knowledge and record. This is what I made last month with 3 books.

Jan: $52.49

Hopefully that's a sign of an even better year than last year. My main goal is to pull in $500 a month.

Anyway, keep chasing those dreams and don't forget, it's Women In Horror Month as well as Black History Month. To give you the best of both worlds go check out the awesome minds behind Graveyard Shift Sisters They are doing 28 days of Black Women In Horror and it's going to be epic!

Planet Dead 2

It's Finally Here!

It's only been a year since I started this self publishing journey but here I am with 7 books out and two down in my current series. Sometimes with the marketing and all the work that goes into the book after it's written I forget to take the time to enjoy the fact that I'm living my dream. I'm doing what I've always said I wanted to do.

So this is me taking the time to ignore the sales, the bills, and the stress. You did it! You set out to tell a story, to build a whole new world and people are loving it, some people hate it, but some people hate Entourage and that was HBO gold! So just keep pushing forward.

Okay now that the peep talk is done!

I got a few plans for the future:
  • I'm looking into doing a YouTube channel.
  • I'm starting a media company, based around helping authors on a budget.
  • I'm putting together The Realm, which is gonna be a 3 book YA Fantasy released this year.
  • Working on some Planet Dead tie-ins.
  • Trying to make it through another day.

Thanks To Everyone That Has Pushed Me Forward This Year. You Guys Are The Real MVPs!

You Know What's Hard....

I've been self-published for a little over a month now and while I could complain about a lack of sales and reviews, I won't. I love the fact that I even got it out there, it's the very first step towards what I want to do in life. Yet what I'm finding to be hard is the next step, my next project, my next move, my next anything!

I'm kind of at a stand still, I have my main novel that I'm working on and a mystery series that I'm plotting out, but I feel if I want to be a full-time author, I need to be taking more steps than just sitting down and writing every night.

I guess I feel that I should be bringing more to the table if I really want to make my dreams come true. So I started looking into audio books, online retail, and making a Youtube channel. I started looking up more ways to get myself out there, to find the people that want to read what I'm putting out.

What's hard is knowing you meant to be something and not fully understanding how to go about it. There are too many different avenues to go down, so I'm deciding here and now.

I'm gonna say fuck it and write....I'll figure the rest out as I go.

But I do want to do a YouTube channel, something horror based......

Someday

P.S: Check Out My Book Trailer! I think I did a pretty good job for my first time.
